Teen Yoga Therapy at Red Mountain Colorado

“Breathe in deeply to bring your mind home to your body”

-Thich Nhat Hanh

At Red Mountain Colorado, we help students relieve stress and improve their overall quality of life by treating the body, mind and spirit with a holistic approach. Our teen yoga therapy is designed to break up the stress that is closely tied to a variety of illnesses.

Yoga is an ancient practice that can help your child achieve a higher sense of self-awareness and compassion by changing their outlook on their relationships and daily lives. Through practice, teens gain better insight into how to take control of their breathing and emotions, helping them foster healthier long-term coping skills.

Meditation and yoga are the pillars that support our mindfulness program at Red Mountain Colorado. The movement of yoga allows students bring awareness to their bodies and set positive intentions within themselves. Yoga can allow them to accept, expand on and exceed their limitations, which is a crucial aspect of inner healing.

The Benefits of Yoga for Teens

Yoga is a remarkable form of exercise and therapy. Not only can it help your teen feel good in the moment, but it also has lasting benefits that can stay with your teen beyond their time at our treatment program. These long-term benefits include:

Improved Brain Development.

The brain is in a significant state of growth during the early and late teenage years. Studies have found that yoga aids in this development by cultivating discipline, creativity, self-control and other executive functions.

An Increase in Self-Esteem.

Teens struggling with dual diagnosis disorders typically suffer from a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. As your teen practices yoga, they’ll grow stronger, more flexible and more disciplined. Experiencing these improvements can help increase your teen’s self-esteem and self-worth.

Reduced Anxiety and Improved Mood.

A common reason that teens turn to unhealthy choices is because they are trying to cope with anxiety or depression. Similar to other physical activity and mindfulness, yoga releases feel-good chemicals in the brain and can help reduce symptoms of anxiety.

An Improved Ability to Self-Regulate Emotions.

Teens struggling tend to suffer from impulsivity and don’t know how to manage their emotions. Just like meditation and mindfulness, yoga can help your teen be in the present moment and establish a focused state of mind, allowing them to process their feelings and emotions more productively.

What Yoga Therapy is Like at Red Mountain Colorado

During their stay at our treatment center, your teen will participate in yoga therapy twice a week in the morning, before they go to school. Your teen will also occasionally have access to a a third morning yoga session with an instructor.

Your teen will experience two types of yoga practice:

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga takes a more relaxed approach and includes a lot of deep stretching to release tension in the deep tissues of the body. This type of yoga is perfect for all skills level, giving your teen a great place to start if they’ve never practiced yoga before.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is more of a traditional style of yoga. During these instructor-guided sessions, your teen will transition through different poses and movements, almost like in a dance. This type of yoga offers your teen a more intense exercise that will challenge them and leave them feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
